Visualization and Virtual Environment Facilities

The Virtual Environments Group at NCSA manages several laboratories located at the Beckman Institute on the campus of the University of Illinois in Urabana-Champaign.

The CAVE

The CAVE(TM) is a multi-person, room-sized, high-resolution, 3D video and audio environment.Currently, four projectors are used to throw full-color, computer-generated images onto three walls and the floor (the software could support a 6 wall CAVE.)

Numerical and Renaissance Experimental Labs

The Numerical Laboratory (NL) and the Renaissance Experimental Laboratory's (REL) primary purpose is to provide state-of-the-art graphics computer technology to NCSA users, staff, and partners, for work related to NCSA's current Program Plan. A large number of workstations are maintained here as well as and semester-long classes are based here.

The Infinity Wall and the ImmersaDesk, anchor the two ends of the room. They provide a space for short seminars and workshops, as well as a large-scale virtual environments to use self-contained, or collaboratively with other facilities.
