      Network troubleshooting

      1. Run winipcfg and see if you have been assigned an IP address. You should get an address and be within the lease time after you boot up (cold -- not from a suspended windows session).

If you do not have an IP address, or if the lease has expired (under the "More Info" button in winipcfg), click the "Renew" button to get a new address and/or a change in the lease assignment and expiration times.

      2. Run a DOS shell, and ping "205.253.57.1" to see if you get a proper response. If not, use winipcfg to get a new address as described above, and see if that fixes the problem. (As a sanity check, 205.253.57.1 should also be the default gateway in winipcfg.)

      3. Once ping works, Try using your web browser to get to www.ncsa.uiuc.edu and some random site not on the vBNS or Abilene (cnn.com or whatever).

      4. If all is well, try kerberos and the network neighborhood.
